Rich heiress Mariya Vorontsova disappears in provincial Ozyorsk. The police suspect that her husband, businessman Mark Vorontsov, was involved in her disappearance. The investigation is entrusted to a novice investigator Alina Novinskaya. At the same time, several women were killed one after another in the city.

Alina Novinskaya is now a housewife, wife of Mark Vorontsov and stepmother of little Antoshka. She does not regret the ruined career of an investigator, because she adores her husband and stepson. Mark and Antoshka love her. But one day, on a business trip, Mark meets a woman named Nadya, who is like two peas in a pod similar to his missing wife Mariya.

Alina watches her husband and finds out that Mark is cheating on her with Nadya, a woman who looks like his first wife. She meets with Nadya and offers her compensation. Nadya takes the money, but then tells everything to Mark. Mark tells Nadya the truth that she is his first wife.

Mark brings Nadya to the apartment where they once lived, hoping that her memory will return to her. Alina comes to a new job at the Investigative Committee and meets Roman there. Roman thinks they still have a chance. Alina's father doubts that the woman to whom Mark left is Mariya.

A neighbor sees Alina in a pool of blood and Mark with a knife in his hand. Mark is being detained. Roman is convinced that he was the one who tried to kill Alina. Mark denies everything. Alina leaves the hospital and visits Mark in prison.

The police find a burial place with a woman's corpse and documents in the name of Mariya Vorontsova. Roman insists that the woman in the grave is not Mariya. DNA examination confirms this. Alina initiates a re-examination in an independent laboratory.
